Process control can be regarded as a branch of both statistics and engineering. It deals with mechanisms and architectures involved in maintenance specific processes’ output within desired ranges. Process control is widely employed in industries and enables mass production in processes which are continuous for example manufacturing of paper and oil refining.
According to process control theory, a few personnel are required to operate processes which are complex from a control room which is centrally placed. This is attainable through automation.
Process control theory uses a programmable logic controller. This device reads both analog and digital inputs and gives digital and analog outputs.
Process control theory has three types of controls.
The first one is batch control system. Raw materials in specific quantities are combined in a particular manner for a given time duration for production of either end or intermediate results.
The second one is discrete process control which is applied in areas such as production of automobiles attained through assembly using robots.
Lastly, Continuous control system finds its application in production of fuels, plastics and chemicals.
